When Bailey Zimmerman first heard “Rock and a Hard Place,” he knew the lovesick song was for him. Apple Music’s newest Up Next artist, Zimmerman connected so deeply with the track, written by Heath Warren, Jacob Hackworth, and Jet Black, that he begged Warren to let him cut it for his late-2022 EP Leave the Light On. To capture the emotion of the original demo, Zimmerman studied Warren’s performance and tried to dig deeply into the headspace of the narrator, who is feeling painfully disconnected from a lover. A perfectionist, Zimmerman cut and recut the song until he felt he’d done it justice; this version comes from his new Apple Music Session, recorded in Nashville. “What is he saying? What happened on this night? Why is he so sad? What is going on?” Zimmerman muses to Apple Music. “So I locked in. And I had to really lock into this song. I cut that song 87 times before it was done.” This playlist tracks what’s happening from the heart of the country scene to its outer edges.
