With his new album Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven?, Tyler Childers has shared a glimpse at his own personal theology. The widely acclaimed country singer-songwriter ministers to his cult following across an ambitous triple album, comprising three distinct collections of eight spiritually charged songs, each performed one of three ways: raw and demo-like for the “Hallelujah” third; lusher and more polished for “Jubilee”; and thoughtfully experimental for “Joyful Noise.” One standout from the “Hallelujah” portion of the project is its version of “Way of the Triune God,” a soulful celebration of a “faith too strong to be left doubtin’”—as well as Childers’ own sobriety (“I don’t need the pills you take just to feel the spirit movin’”)—that draws joyfully from old-time and gospel.
