As storytellers go, Koe Wetzel is one of country music’s more fascinating, both for his lyrical ability and for the wild, often true stories his songs tell. One such song is “Cabo,” an impossible-to-ignore cut off Wetzel’s recent album Hell Paso. “Cabo” has it all: sex, cocaine, and a “mariachi band…singing ‘Feliz Navidad,’” not to mention what’s probably the first mention of a “donkey show” in popular country music. Wetzel’s producer, Taylor Kimball, offers up a minimal but complementary soundscape for “Cabo,” with flourishes of Spanish guitar and an ominous rhythm section serving to underscore the darkly rowdy story at the track’s heart. This playlist tracks what’s happening from the heart of the country scene to its outer edges. Check back here early and often, and if you hear something you like, add it to your library.
